UPDATED AS OF FEBRUARY 25, 2024

NEW YORK 1875 STATE CENSUS

This is another State Census that Matt Putnam found and got going and is still going till it’s complete. I kinda added bits of info and edited the stuff and this is going to turn out to be a great help when finished umpteen years from now. And when done we’ll have censuses every 5 years from 1850 to 1880. No other state like this. Everyone from Matt back to the census takers have been a great help.

ADELBERT PUTMAN  Albany, Ward 3, Albany County

He is a machinist 22 born in Montgomery County. His wife Mary Saltsman is 20 born in Montgomery County. He is living just a couple of houses away from his folks. By 1880 they will be back in Montgomery County living in the town of Palatine with a couple of kids. He is a son of Vischer Putman jr. and Charlotte Serviss of Amsterdam. Dutch Family.

VISHER PUTNAM  Albany, Ward 3, Albany County

He is a machinist 55 born in Montgomery County and his wife Charlotte Serviss is 56 born in Montgomery County. They will be here again in 1880. Dutch family from Amsterdam, Montgomery County. He is a son of Vischer Putman and Maria Balch of Mohawk. Dutch Family.

ELIZA PUTMAN  Albany, Ward 6, Albany County

She is a nurse 54 born in Albany County and is listed as a widow. Eliza has been here for some time now. No idea who her Putman husband was though.

MRS. PUTMAN  Albany, Ward 6, Albany County

She is a Widow 30 born in Albany County and has her daughter Ida 9 born in Albany County living with her. “Mrs.” is a housekeeper at the Globe Hotel where she lives. In 1880 we find out that “Mrs.” is actually named Emily and she has remarried a Simeon Gilbert. Ida is living with them and is listed as “Putnam.” No ideas on who Emily’s Putnam husband was though.

PETER PUTNAM  Albany, Ward 6, Albany County

He is a cutter 65 born in Otsego County and is listed as a widower. He has been here in Albany going all the way back to 1840. He will be here again in 1880 before dying on 27 Dec 1893. Everyone living in Otsego County in 1810 was Dutch so Peter should belong to that family. Still not sure though.

PETER PUTNAM  Albany, Ward 7, Albany County

He is a hatter 35 born in Albany County, his wife Adelaide Haswell is 34 born in Albany County. He is Peter Jr. and a son of the above. They will be here in 1880 and 1900 and beyond.

DAVID PUTNAM  Albany, Ward 7, Albany County

He is a bookkeeper 35 born in Schenectady County, his wife Henrietta Wilson is 27 born in Albany County. They will be here in 1880 with a young son William. Nancy will be here in 1800 as well before passing away on 14 Feb 1882. New England family.

The census listing was Putnam Millman 55 Canada, his wife Dennis 39 Canada, Manuel 9 NY, Millman 6 NY, Emma 5 NY. I am not sure if the census taker in 1870 made an error and their last name should have been Putnam, or whether they changed their last name. They will be here in 1880 but Anthony will be known as Manuel Putman. He will then be known as Manuel right up until his death here in 1911.

LEVI PUTNAM  Cohoes, Ward 2, Albany County

He is in farming and is 18 born in Fulton County. He is boarding with the George H. Howarth family. Dutch.

He is a laborer 54 born in Washington County. He is listed as married but his wife is not around. Joseph is living with his married daughter Georgianna Stearns 23 born in Albany County and son-in-law Geoge Stearns a Laborer 30 born in Washington County. Back in 1855 Joseph was married to a woman named Elizabeth and they had daughter Georgiana, then aged 2. This should be the same family. In 1855 Joseph said that he was born in Canada. By 1880 Emma and Jennie will be back in Green Island. Now, if you look back in the 1865 census William and Maria Birdsell were here in Watervliet and had a niece Emma Myers 19 born in Albany County living with them. George died and Rebecca was in Pine Grove, Warren County, Pennsylvania in 1870. This may be their daughter off on her own. That is just a guess though.

JOSIE PUTMAN  Torrey, Yates County

She is 13 PA and is living with the family of Amos and Julia Strong. She is probably related to the above Hattie somehow. George Thayer Putnam and Rebecca Rider had a daughter named Georgianna who was born about the same time. No ideas really.
